John PETERS
Born in Pennington, Lancashire, England prior to his baptism on November 9, 1776. He married Sarah TYRER on April 21, 1800 at St. Mary the Virgin, Eccleston, Lancashire, England. The church record further states they were "both of this Parish". Sarah was born in 1783 and was Baptized on May 18, 1783 , Eccleston near Croston, Lancashire, England. She was the daughter of Joseph and Alice (BENSON) TYRER.
Their first child, James, was born in 1801, the exact date is unknown at this time, but was prior to his baptism in the Church of England in Lancashire. The entry in the Church records for 1801 states "April 5th, James, son of John Peters of Upholland, Farmer".
Their second child, Joseph, was born on September 9, 1802 according to his grave stone at he Peters Cemetery in Pennsylvania. According to church records he was christened "September 30, Joseph, son of John and Sarah Peters" at Protestant Dissenters-NC, Rainford, Lancashire, England."
The fact that Joseph was christened in the Protestant Dissenters - NC Church (NC denotes Non-Conformist) indicates the family had split from the Church of England sometime between the baptisms of James and Joseph. This was probably the primary reason the family emigrated to America.
John Peters, wife and children are shown on the steerage passenger list for the ship Liverpool Packet. It sailed from Liverpool arriving at the Port of Philadelphia on July 18, 1818. The manifest lists "John Peters, wife & children" along with a description of their baggage.
The family next shows up on the 1820 US Census in Athens, Bradford County, Pennsylvania. A review of the ages of John and Sarah's family matches the census numbers with one exception. The census shows and extra male in the 16 to 25 yrs column.
The Cromie Family Tree referenced above states John Peters died at Athens, Bradford Co., Pennsylvania in 1825. After his death Sarah and most of the family removed to Eramosa, Wellington County, Ontario, Canada where she died sometime after 1838. The obituary for her oldest son, James, states he settled at Eramosa in 1826.

Joseph PETERS
Born in England on September 9, 1802 and was baptized on September 30, 1802 at the Protestant Dissenters Church - NC in Rainford, Lancashire, England. He came to the US in 1818 with with his parents and siblings.
Joseph married Eliza CAREY / COREY in early May, 1828. According .to the Geneva Gazette published on May 14, 1828 " Peters, Joseph of Erwin m. Eliza COREY in Angelica". I believe she was the daughter of Joseph Alvin COREY and Prudence (PARKS) COREY who resided in Almond, Allegany County, New York. I have not fully explored the CAREY / COREY families in Allegany County to verify this is factual.
According to the James E. Peters biography in The History of Tioga County and his obituary in the Wellsville Agitator, the Joseph Peters family lived in Almond, Allegany County, NY. A search of the 1830 US Census for Almond does not show any Peters family listed there, but does list a Joseph Peters with the correct ages for the family enumerated in Belfast, Allegany Co., NY. They lived there until about 1838, then moved to Lawrenceville, Tioga County PA and are enumerated in the 1840 census in Lawrence Twp., Tioga Co., PA
The family moved to Farmington Township in Tioga County, PA where Joseph bought a farm from William BINGHAM on February 21, 1849. Joseph and Eliza lived there until their deaths. Joseph died on July 17, 1878 and Eliza died on August 18, 1880. They are both buried in what is known as the Peters Cemetery about 100 yards down the dirt road west of their old farmhouse.
NOTE: As a teenager in the early 1960's, I use to spend a week in the summers with Joseph and Eliza's great grandson Charles Harold Peters (my uncle). It was during one of those vacations that Uncle Charles first took me to the Peters cemetery and to Joseph and Eliza's farm. At that time the house and barn were still standing, but vacant and in poor condition. I returned to the area in 2006, and the house and barn were gone.

CAREY/ COREY - Peters
The parents of Eliza (CAREY / COREY) PETERS (wife of Joseph PETERS) is one of my brick walls. The best lead I have is the announcement in the Geneva Gazette on May 14, 1828 stating Joseph PETERS of Erwin married Eliza COREY in Angelica.
Another lead is in the 1870 U. S. Census for Farmington Twp. Tioga Co., PA. Enumerated with Joseph and Eliza Peters is Joseph Cary a 75 year old male invalid, born in PA. Since Eliza is 70 years old and shows PA as her birth place in this census, I believe this Joseph Cary could be her older brother.
Any assistance to solve this mystery would be greatly appreciated.
